"It wasn't my idea to see a therapist." This is something I hear often when I meet with new clients, especially adolescents. They have come to my office after being referred by others, or brought in by parents, and haven't fully dedicated themselves to the therapy process. It's my job to change this. I approach therapy as a collaborative process, providing support and education in order to help others realize that therapy can be a great outlet for self care. I don't stick to just one therapeutic approach, because I believe that there are many great features from all the therapeutic approaches. So help me in reducing the mental health stigma and let's work together to increase your self care and learn what it means to reduce or eliminate the issues you are facing.

More Info About My Practice

I am a certified PREPARE/ENRICH facilitator and can conduct relationships assessments for couples and parenting assessments. The state of Minnesota has a reduced marriage license fee for those that complete a minimum of 12 hours in premarital education. The best thing about PREPARE/ENRICH is that it is not just for couples seeking premarital counseling, but can also be conducted for couples dating or already in a partnership. Both assessments provide a personalized profile that identifies strengths in relationships and areas of improvement.

How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist

Growing up, I had a "normal" family environment; married parents and older siblings that annoyed me. That all exploded on me when I was in high school. Suddenly my parents separated, one of my brothers was having legal troubles, and it left me with my world falling apart. Drifting through my senior year, I was able to keep things together - barely- without letting others know what was going on behind the scenes with me. They didn't know that I had developed depression and anxiety. Anxiety so great that I couldn't keep a simple job, nor stay in a class that I worked hard to get into and really enjoyed at one time. Fortunately, I had an awesome teacher I could talk to and made it through my last year of high school and eventually transitioned to college. In the beginning it was a struggle living on my own, but I found my footing and began my path in the mental health field. Getting connected with others in my degree helped me see what I could do to help others. That eventually led me to where I am now. Having completed a Master's degree, I am a fully licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I now am able to help those that have faced, or are facing similar issues that I went through. But I am also working to help those that are facing things I have never been through, which is why therapy is a learning and collaboration for both therapists and clients.
