How Psychotherapy Can Help

Once you have an intimate relationship with yourself, can examine your thoughts words and actions without harsh criticism or judgment and can manage your own reactions, relationships become fulfilling and hopeful. Mindfulness is an ancient practice used by people for many thousands of years to experience more serenity and less DRAMA in their lives. The reason mindfulness works so well to increase serenity is that it moves the modern brain from a chronic state of stress where there are stress hormones circulating in your brain at all times. The brain becomes more filed with the hormones that result in happiness and good judgment and decision making. The creative brain works better, the emotional brain is easier to regulate, the cognitive brain is not filled with distortions which color your life experience in FEAR and you are more calm and peaceful in every way when you learn to manage your consciousness. According to ancient teachings there are five patterns of consciousness; accurate perception, mis-perception (which leads to suffering), remembering (which when traumatized can lead to suffering), conceptualizing (intellectual) and deep sleep. All five of these patterns improve with mindfulness, psychotherapy and attention to your habits. Let us help you implement healthy habits which can take the place of your old, less healthy ones. We are all busy doing the same thing ourselves.

My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy

To deepen your life experience is the greatest gift of psychotherapy. We are here to become progressively more filled with sustained serenity. When this happens the World around you also becomes more joyful. Your relationships improve, your life becomes less weighty, your concept of yourself becomes more powerful, you are able to get more done, and you enjoy life more because you are taking good care of yourself. We believe we can skillfully assist you in this process. I am a Jungian at heart. I think Carl Jung was an amazing man on a life journey of curiosity. He found out a good deal about himself and created some interesting models for professionals. As a family therapist, my mentor is Carl Whitaker, one of the founders of Marriage and Family Therapy. Carl Whitaker believed we are always dealing with relationships no matter how many people we are treating. I believe this as well. I used to watch Carl Whitaker do Family Therapy in awe and think it not possible for me to ever be that skilled in the way I work with people. I now believe that I have gained a skill comparable to Carl Whitaker and thank him so very much for his mentorship.

What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist

I have been there, I would never ask a patient to do what I have not done. I know the power of psychotherapy and I enjoy being present while others find their way in life. In my own work, I have discovered much about myself. I am constantly looking at how I get in my own way and how I create my own suffering. I love a poem by Portia Nelson: Autobiography in
Five Short Chapters
By Portia Nelson
Autobiography in Five Short Chapters
Chapter One
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost. I am helpless.
It is not my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.
Chapter Two
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I am in this same place.
But, it is not my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.
Chapter Three
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in, it's a habit but,
my eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.
Chapter Four
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.
Chapter Five
I walk down another street.
I believe this poem beautifully describes the process of change.

My Role as a Therapist

My role as a psychotherapist is to witness and guide the growth and development of each individual who puts his/her trust in me to help them. I don't have your answers, but I can help you find them inside yourself. I have spent my entire career learning how to heal relationships (both for myself and how to help others as well). As a Therapist, I try to be with you in an unconditional regard. I believe you are where you are because of your history and that once that is understood and some changes are made you will no longer be comfortable limiting yourself in any way. I am willing to go the distance with you and so are my interns. We are committed to being with you for as long as you wish or off and on if that works better for you. We do not have any arbitrary guidelines to follow based on Insurance, grant or government funding. We do this on purpose so that we can help you the best possible way. We strictly follow the ethics and guidelines of our profession and are accountable to each other and other professional bodies as well.
