I help individuals who are recovering from a traumatic event or experience such as physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, grief and loss, human trafficking, immigration, or war. I help individuals learn more about the effects of trauma and aid them in finding meaning and purpose in their personal journey from victim to survivor. I see individuals as unique in their experience, however trauma can often times leave one feeling angry, anxious, depressed, guilty, or confused. From relationships to career, we explore personal functioning and find ways to better manage personal conflicts. I help individuals with concerns about anger management, anxiety, depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), mood disorder, and codependency.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

The hardest part can be walking through those doors into your first therapy appointment. We can all have fears around new experiences. Therapy services are usually voluntary unless you are required to do so through your work, school, or legal system; thus you're in control of whether you decide to participate in therapy. Therapy services are confidential so there should be no harm in checking it out whether you go to one appointment, two, or continue as you feel the need. If you're on the fence about something then you are half way to crossing over to the other side. Being on the fence about something does tell you that you're considering the other option because there may be something wrong about your current situation or functioning.

To help in deciding whether to participate in therapy you can ask yourself a few questions: How much do I worry about this problem? Will my problem get worse if I don't get help? What are my fears or barriers to seeking therapy? Are others' opinions influencing my hesitancy about therapy? What will my problem look like in a few weeks, months, or year if I don't get help? Will my life or someone else's life be affected negatively if I don't get help? Is my problem negatively affecting work, school, home, or in relationships with friends and family?

Asking yourself more about the dimensions of your problem can help you make a decision about going to therapy. If you're still not sure then it could be helpful to go ahead and try therapy so you can better understanding your problem and determine a plan for resolving it. Therapy can help you explore the roots of your problem, gain new perspectives, and learn the tools needed to improve the way you cope.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

It is important to like your therapist! Choose someone you think you could freely open up with and honestly discuss your concerns. Sometimes it helps when you feel like you have something in common with your therapist whether it be age, culture, or you agree with something they wrote on their profile. Choose someone you perceive as friendly, nonjudgemental, and accepting.

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

You are human and as humans we all have our low moments. It helps to get an objective point of view sometimes. Usually when we talk to someone close to us about a problem they might start talking about their experience, or tell you what you should and shouldn't do or feel. I see therapy as more of a luxury because it use to be only accessible to the wealthy and celebrities. Movies and TV shows have created an unrealistic perception of therapy and those seeking therapy. You might feel like the only one but take a moment to google celebrities with mental illness and you will be surprised because you probably never thought of them as flawed. Think of it like watching a movie, you're able to see the whole picture and things the characters in the movie can't see. The characters on the other hand are just going along unaware of the bigger picture and factors affecting their outcome. If you were able to warn the characters in the movie and tell them about the parts they are missing then they could possibly change the ending. Therapy is like having someone view your life movie while giving you insights so you might gain new perspectives and a chance to enhance your experience. It's like having a secret weapon to combat issues in your life because no one will know you're in therapy unless you tell them.
