Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

Sometimes we all need a little extra support. When we are sick, we need physical support and we go to the doctor. This does not translate exactly but the idea is the same. Our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors need support similarly to the way our bodies do. When thinking about starting counseling, it may be helpful to look at it from this lens. Often times, counseling can be seen as a more vulnerable process but vulnerability is something that requires strength, not weakness. Most individuals have some basic skills to find their way through whatever they are struggling with and the counseling process enhances those skills to provide an efficient way through your current life struggle.

When explaining this to children, I begin by talking about support systems. I think the concept of support systems can be extremely valuable to children and adults. Parents can tell children when they are young the family is the support system and their parents get to decide who is added to it. As they grow older, they are able to decided who is added and who is taken away. Therapy can be seen as a way to enhance your support system for the time being. It is a decision you get to make for your children and it also helps you.
