Welcome! I am pleased that you are taking the opportunity to consider entering into therapy and improving your life for the better. People seek a therapist for many different reasons. Common struggles include feelings of persistent sadness, anxiety, anger, resentment, or fear, relationship problems, school or work difficulties. Perhaps you find it hard to cut yourself a break and stop criticizing yourself? Do you struggle to feel confident in yourself and your abilities? Maybe you don't feel you know yourself very well and want to develop a deeper understanding of yourself.
We all come across obstacles in our lives, or times when we feel lost patterns that keep us from living the life we want to be living. At times it can be difficult to sort out why we are struggling and how to change our lives for the better. Having someone to help you navigate these difficulties can be important in being able to understand yourself and identify that path forward.
Being a therapist is a great privilege. Coming to know people deeply and listening to their struggles has shown me that both positive and negative life experiences provide opportunities for learning, healing, and growth. I believe we move towards growth when we muster the courage and take the opportunity to look at ourselves in depth.
I am a licensed psychologist who works with people struggling with many different types of difficulties. In our work, I will listen closely and non-judgmentally to your difficulties, so together we can help you understand what is keeping you from living the life you want to be living. My work is to help individuals understand their own thoughts, feelings, behaviors, hopes, and desires more fully, so they can feel more free to change what is no longer working for them. I also strive to help individuals develop more self-compassion.

More Info About My Practice
I offer a free telephone consultation. My private practice is in a convenient location in Baltimore (accessible by public transportation) and I offer weekend appointments to accommodate busy work schedules. Free parking is available. I am not in-network for any insurance companies, but I am happy to provide documentation for you to submit to you insurance if you have out-of-network coverage. After reimbursement, your out-of-pocket cost may be comparable to what you would pay if you were seen by an in-network provider. Under select circumstances I may be willing to negotiate a sliding fee scale.
Had a Negative Therapy Experience?
Many people have had negative experiences with therapy. The most important thing that determines the success of therapy is the fit between patient and therapist. You need to feel comfortable, safe, and understood by the therapist with whom they are working. Just like we gravitate towards different personalities in our friends and romantic partners, different people are going to work better with different therapists.
If the match is not there between therapist and client, it is unlikely to feel a truly helpful experience. What works for one person may not necessarily work for another, so it is important not to let one bad experience negatively impact your expectations of therapy in general. As a client, you have the right to shop around for your therapist and determine who feels like a fit. A therapist will be respectful of your judgment and will work towards helping you find the right person to help you.
Theoretical Influences that Guide My Work
My approach to therapy is integrative, meaning that I draw upon several different theoretical approaches in order to adapt my treatment to each person. I am most strongly influenced by psychodynamic thought, which means that I try to understand how an individual's life experiences and relationships can influence the lens through which that person sees themselves and others. I believe it is important to appreciate the complexity of each person with whom I work, and I focus on trying to help people come to know themselves more deeply than they have before. Often times people find that there is a part of themselves that holds them back from living the life they want to live. I focus on helping individuals understand the different parts of themselves that may at times come in conflict about how to move forward in life.
In addition to being influenced by psychodynamic theory, I have training and at times will integrate techniques from other types of therapy (mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, etc.) if I feel such techniques will be helpful. Ultimately, I believe it is important that therapy be individualized to each person.
