I meet you where you are at, tuning into your concerns and preoccupations while holding a space for expansion of understanding and deepening of perspective. Each session brings new potential for exploration and growth, unraveling the areas where you feel stuck. Our time together is an opportunity for you to: process your emotions; uncover and reshape self-limiting beliefs; increase mindful perceptions; clarify values and generate value-based plans of action; and integrate disparate aspects of the self including mind & body. My philosophy embraces paradox - that is, it sees the dynamic of a successful, satisfying life as a balance of opposing forces. As such, I believe the key is not in finding one "right" way, but continually awakening to in-the-moment challenges which life presents to you.
My style employs open-ended questioning, irreverence, compassion, analysis, acknowledgment of emotions, somatic attunement, observation of automatic patterns, meditative states, and commentary that steps outside the frame of ordinary conversation to narrate the processes I am witnessing in the room with you. I believe these techniques allow us to move beyond the confines of social convention into a more truly therapeutic alliance. Since talk therapy can, at least on the surface, mimic the appearance of a friendly chat, methods which alter everyday norms can be necessary in order to encourage an effectively discerning examination of the self. This journey can be both challenging and incredibly rewarding.

My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy
Therapy can be a vital means of bolstering your inner strengths and resiliency. I see it as a collaborative process where I bring my expertise as facilitator to further your growth, development and expansion. Mindfulness-based approaches are key to my practice, as they have been proven to be an important factor in achieving greater peace of mind. As a practitioner of meditation, I have seen the truth of this firsthand.
I know that therapy can be a daunting experience. It can bring up a lot of vulnerability to express your innermost thoughts. Perhaps in the past you have done so, and it didn't work out the way you had hoped. I would like to assure you that I respect these concerns, and that I see our time together as contingent upon the continual giving of your permission - you are in the driver seat of your life. Through this approach, we will model self-determination and healthy boundaries, thereby enhancing your ability to navigate your relationships.
I take my role as a professional seriously. Furthermore, I see my role as a therapist as an honor and a sacred responsibility. Your sense of safety, privacy, and autonomy are vital. I believe that through the interpersonal dynamic we will engage in, you can learn how to protect and nourish yourself and others, increasing your psychological flexibility and playfulness while cultivating the discipline you need to pursue your goals and maintain balance.
My View on the Nature of 'Disorders'
Diagnosis is an imperfect science. The National Institute of Mental Health, the world's largest funding agency for mental health research, withdrew support for current diagnostic classifications, calling the DSM-5 manual weak and lacking validity. What model can we use? According to Acceptance & Commitment Therapy research, 25% of the variance in almost all major syndromes stems from EXPERIENTIAL AVOIDANCE. Normal mental processes like problem-solving, analyzing, categorizing, predicting and evaluating work great for obstacles in the external world. But these same processes, when turned inward, can wreak havoc on our internal world - leading to anxiety, endless loops of catastrophic thinking, and the like. An approach which narrowly focuses on 'Disorders' turns people into problems which need to be fixed.
Instead, what if we shifted focus to accept the full reality of living? That there will be moments of sadness and fear, but that they are not necessarily an 'abnormal' experience. We can learn to step into, rather than away from, the things we are afraid to confront - whether an uncovered self-limiting belief about our own unworthiness which has impeded pursuit of a lifelong dream; or a situation that causes us so much discomfort we avoid it to the point of phobia. We counter avoidance with gentle exposure, and emotional overwhelm with mindful non-attachment. We explore your values and needs - what your soul yearns for, allowing you to gain clarity and consciousness in your actions.
