Individuals often come to counseling as a result of overwhelming stress, unmanageable feelings/emotions, or life-changing events which cause them to feel out of control. They often feel inadequately prepared to cope with these challenges, and as a result, they react to stress by fighting, fleeing, or freezing. When chronic stress takes over in the mind/body, we begin to feel those uncomfortable feelings of sadness, fear, anger, guilt, shame, etc. When left unresolved, these feelings often lead to physical ailments as well as emotional upheaval.
A counseling relationship provides a safe place for you to face challenges and learn healthy ways to cope with life's ups and downs. The changes you desire, the outcomes you hope for, and the skills you seek are within your own control and already a part of who you are. Counseling is a collaborative relationship where we can work together to help you find more contentment and peace in your life.
I consider your overall wellness and utilize mindfulness-based, somatic, and solution-focused methods to help you move forward in your life. My approach is more than talk therapy and does not rely heavily on what has happened in the past. Instead I take a here-and-now approach to examine what is going on in the present moment, helping you realize the many strengths and gifts you already possess to move forward through life's challenges.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?
It is understandable to have mixed feelings about going to counseling and engaging in therapy. Perhaps you haven't tried counseling before or you had a bad experience in therapy in the past. It is normal to feel a sense of fear about entering into this relationship. You wouldn't be human if you didn't feel some sense of nervousness, fear, or apprehension. However, if you take the step to face your fear and give yourself a chance to see if it helps you, you will be giving yourself the opportunity to become stronger, more resilient, and to find more peace in your life.
It is important to find a counselor that is a right fit for you. By no means are you locked into seeing one counselor if you do not feel safe and do not feel a trusted connection with your counselor. I encourage you to take the step and find out if counseling will help you move forward. I am happy to provide you with a free initial phone consultation to address your concerns and answer your questions.
How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist
As your counselor, I am also a human being, just like you, who faces life challenges. It is through these challenges that I have become a stronger person and found a way to be more present in my daily life. Most recently, I experienced the life change of divorce, which was one of the most difficult challenges in my life. As a "survivor of divorce," I have learned a lot about myself, relationships, stress, and resilience. It tested me almost to the breaking point at times, yet through the support and guidance of my own counselor, I was able to move forward in a healthy way. No matter what your struggle is, it is possible to move through the pain and suffering and find peace.
