On the Fence About Going to Therapy?
On the fence, wondering if counseling / therapy is right for you? I'm sure you have a questions and concerns. I encourage you to contact me, allow me to answer any questions you have about counseling, and address any concerns that you might have.
Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist
Most important factors in choosing a therapist would be the ability to connect, similar interests and experiences/training/credentials. Choosing a therapist is like dating! You may have to read a few profiles, or visit a few therapists before you find one that is a good fit!
You, as the client, may be anxious enough wondering if counseling is a good fit for you, finding someone you connect with can help ease some of those jitters you may be feeling. Trust that gut feeling you have. Additionally, just as you seek out people that enjoy the same interests, finding a therapist who enjoys working with what you, as the client are struggling with is vital. For example, if you have a teen who is struggling, you'll want to find a therapist who enjoys working with teenagers, and is well versed in teens' social issues. I can imagine the frustrations the teen might feel in counseling if the counselor does not like working with teenagers!
Lastly, you'll want to find someone who is trained and has the credentials to support the services you are seeking out. For example, if you are seeking out distance counseling, you'll want a counselor who is credentialed as a Distance Credentialed Counselor or who has taken courses in distance counseling. Another example, if you are wanting therapy for your child, you'll want to find a therapist who has the experience of working with children, has the training or credentialing that designates that they specialize in the developmental levels
