You are the expert on yourself, and have done the best you can so far, with the knowledge and skills currently available to you. For positive change to happen, you need a safe space to explore new or more satisfying ways of living. When you seek therapy, I assume it is because you have come as far as you can with the current knowledge and insight available to you, and that you now need new input in order to make the changes you desire.

Usually the therapy will start with exploring what changes you require, and together we will map a desired outcome. My task as a psychologist is to help you examine whatever stands in the way of living in an authentic and satisfying manner. Obstacles to a good life may include: A limiting way of perceiving people, events or interactions. A need for new life skills, communication skills, conflict resolution skills, thinking skills or coping mechanisms.

I use a wide range of methods and strategies which I discuss with you as we go along. I believe that total transparency on my methods and reasons for applying them keeps you safe and in charge of your own change process.

Sms or email to book an appointment. I am available for online therapy on Skype if you are unable to get to Gordon's Bay, Western Cape. My Skype profile name is 'jmdpsych-skype'.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I work with all issues, and specifically enjoy issues around the relationship with yourself and others as well as finding your lifepath. Under issues with yourself falls self-esteem, anxiety, depression, phobias, confidence, and destructive or limiting self-perceptions. Under relationships with others falls marital and premarital guidance, issues with your partner, friends, children, parents and colleagues or employees. We also offer conflict resolution and restructuring of interpersonal dynamics for companies and organisations.

What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist

I love my work because I get to see people develop, become happier and take more pleasure in their lives. It is a privilege to be catalysts for positive development.

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

Living well and dealing contructively with your life's challenges is a skill-set. If your parents and teachers didn't have that skills-set themselves, they weren't able to teach the skills to you. You went to school to learn reading, maths, history and so forth. Going to therapy is about attaining self-insight, emotional competence, social and interactional skills, developing good 'mental hygiene', developing a congruent life-path, building a strong relationship with your partner, children, family, friends, colleagues etc. Going to therapy is an indication of being smart enough to access the insights and life-skills knowledge that we as psychologists have spent years learning.
