The dictionary defines emotional resilience as "an ability to recover from, or adjust easily to, misfortune or change." You might think that some people are naturally resilient and some are not, that the capacity for resilience is a matter of luck or genes. I think it is more complicated.

The core belief underlying my counseling approach is that all people have the capacity for resilience and, thus, recovery. While counseling does not protect you from life's inevitable misfortunes, it can help you learn ways to increase the likelihood that your responses to adversity are constructive.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

Many of the people I work with are undergoing difficult transitions - health setbacks, loss of a loved one from death or divorce, loss of career, retirement, empty nest / loss of purpose, discovery of partners' addiction or affair. They seek help because they feel overwhelmed and stuck. I am good at listening and helping folks take a step back, relax, and focus on solutions. In therapy I encourage experimentation and reasonable risk-taking. I emphasize empowerment through action. A guiding principle in my approach is: If what you are doing isn't working, do something else!
