Morgantown is the seat of Monongalia County, West Virginia. The city is located along the Monongahela River and covers a land area of 10 square miles. Morgantown was founded by Zackquill Morgan, who settled the area in 1772. 

Morgantown has a population of 30,500 people. The city is 84% white, 6% black, 5% Asian, and 3% Hispanic. Seven percent of people in the city were born in a foreign country. Roughly 9% of Morgantown residents speak a foreign language at home.

The median age in the city is 24 years old. Roughly 49% of adults age 25 or older have a bachelor’s degree. About 1,300 veterans have made the city their home. 

Residents of Morgantown earn an average yearly salary of $23,200. The median household income is $35,500. The homeownership rate is 43%. Over 35% of people in Morgantown live below the poverty line. 

Mental Health in Morgantown

Opioid abuse is a major concern in Morgantown and Monongalia County. Between August 2016 and October 2017, the Morgantown Police Department responded to 56 overdoses, seven of which were fatal. To help tackle this issue, a drop box was installed at the local police station. Residents can anonymously dispose of any drugs into the box without being interrogated. 

Monongalia County has the third highest overdose death rate in West Virginia. To curtail the rising number of fatalities, the county’s Health Department now offers training to residents on how to use the overdose reversal drug Narcan. Individuals who complete the 30-minute training receive a kit containing the medication. They can then administer Narcan if the need arises.
