Navigating significant life transitions can be a source of anxiety, confusion, and overwhelm for many individuals. Whether managing difficult or unfamiliar life events, or adjusting to new developmental life stages (such as adolescence, young adulthood, middle age, or retirement), these transitions impact us tremendously. Adolescence and young adulthood is perhaps the greatest period of transformation in one's life, especially in our modern, technological age where both a sense of community and the customs and rituals that center around these important rites of passage seem to be fading. As such, many teens and young adults find themselves struggling to find a sense of autonomy, identity, and belonging. Through this difficult period, many individuals often report symptoms of depression, anxiety, loneliness, and stress. Through a warm, empathic, and relational approach, psychotherapists Debra and John Sherk of Sherk Counseling Services have helped many individuals achieve a greater sense of clarity, direction, self-esteem, and growth.

Theoretical Influences that Guide My Work
Our approach focuses on improving relationships with oneself and others. A relational approach enhances our capacity for authenticity and increases our ability to understand the origins of our issues. Influenced by the traditions of depth psychology, depth psychotherapy views our everyday difficulties as symptoms of underlying core assumptions about how we view life and our place in it. Our dreams and other unconscious material give us undefended clues about these deeper core assumptions. Often the most powerful and enduring positive change comes from achieving greater understanding of such core beliefs and how they fuel the symptoms (such as anxiety or depression) in our daily lives.
