Emotional healing takes place in a safe space through the empathic work of a mutually collaborative relationship between therapist and patient. One that is vitally individualized fully private and confidential. Through a mutually authentic dialogue my approach is one of humanness to the greatest extent possible.
I work with individuals experiencing anxiety, depressive feelings, fears and self esteem problems. I also specialize in treating those who suffer from anorexia bulimia nervosa, trauma and dissociation.
My orientation is psychodynamic from a supportive to an insight oriented approach. Cognitive behavioral interventions are used in addition when indicated.
What can get worked out through talking about past and current experiences and issues, can well bring optimal functioning into the present.

More Info About My Practice

I work by appointment only and I see patients a minimum of once weekly. Primarily, I am a fully accredited clinician with extended training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, studies and research in psychoanalysis and certified in group psychotherapy. I have been in private practice for 20+ years and I am a professor of clinical psychology at a major university. I have a strong background of experience working at eating disorder and medical facilities. I also supervise clinicians working in the field of individual and group psychotherapy.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I dedicate a portion of my practice to those struggling with anorexia bulimia nervosa and to those suffering from trauma spectrum disorders and dissociation.
When I work with those struggling with eating disorders I help them to discover the functions of their eating disorder and how this becomes expressed through the therapeutic relationship. Psychological conflicts around feelings, desires, thoughts, fearful feelings and phantasy are worked through respectively in an informative manner. Difficulties in regulating emotional feelings causing tension and dissatisfaction; independence; shame; and body image are a few examples of issues that can be problematic and on many levels causing interference in functioning. By understanding the meaning and the underlying conflicts what can get worked out through talking will not get repeatedly lived out. For information on the group please go to my website.
When I work with those suffering from trauma spectrum disorders I work with the 'whole self' experience, working through the very necessary emotional and behavioral adaptations (both short and long term) that have had complex and influential effects. Such as, fearful feelings, difficulties with identity, dissociation, night-meres, autonomy, control, self-determination, social problems, anxiety, difficulties with perspective and other related trauma sequela. Most importantly, I work in a manner that is consistent, direct and respectful.
