Access to mental health care is an issue for Johnson County youth. At one state psychiatric treatment facility, up to 15 young people may be waiting for a bed to become available. The wait time may last up to 90 days. Due to limited resources, Johnson County teenagers with mental health issues may end up at a juvenile detention center or emergency room instead of a treatment facility.

CIT is a 40-hour training program that teaches police officers the skills they need to de-escalate potentially dangerous mental health situations. When CIT-trained police officers receive calls about residents with mental health issues, the officers may try to divert the individuals to treatment rather than immediately taking them to jail.
