The ups and downs of life are inevitable. The degree to which suffering and pain affect us is something we can learn to exert more influence over. Early in the process of healing you may lack the vitality or energy to even imagine things getting better. The first steps might be enhancing motivation and developing a healthy trust of the process and skills being practiced.
For more than 15 years across a variety of settings, including group homes and wilderness programs, I have been supporting adolescents, young adults in transition, adults and families to bring about meaningful changes that improve their quality of life. I use a mindful approach and incorporate clinical hypnotherapy when appropriate. It is important in healing work to bring equal focus to the body and mind in order to improve awareness of the patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that generate dissatisfaction. Enhancing your capacity to hold and attend to the difficult emotions that were previously and for good reason avoided is critical to moving forward. Turning toward possibilities rather than away from pain leads toward acceptance of feelings as moment to moment experiences that are tolerable even if difficult.
As the negative impacts of avoidance lessen, there is more openness to possibilities and an enhanced sense of well being. This process takes commitment and motivation, but need not take a long time before experiencing significant results.
