About Bend

Bend is the government seat of Deschutes County, Oregon. It has a land area of 33 square miles. The city has an elevation of more than 3,600 feet and is located close to the geographic center of the state. Bend was incorporated in 1904.

Bend has a population of 95,000 people. The population grew by 23% from 2010 to 2017. Ninety-seven percent of the people in Bend are American citizens.

The racial composition of Bend is roughly 87% white, 9% Hispanic, and 2% Asian. Foreign-born people account for 5% of the population. Among adults age 25 or older, 95% have a high school degree, and 42% have a bachelor’s degree.

Mental Health in Bend

In 2011, the Bend Police Department reported a significant increase in suicides. The department received five to six suicide-related calls per day. In 2014, the police department reported an increasing number of mental health calls overall.

The Bend Police Department has a Community Response Team (CRT) that assists people experiencing a mental health crisis. Members of the CRT receive extensive training in both mental health and crisis intervention. They also partner with local hospitals and mental health practitioners to ensure individuals receive appropriate care.

Access to mental health treatment can be an issue for some people in Bend. Nearly 16% of residents do not have health insurance.
