Mental Health in San Mateo

The San Mateo County Mental Health Assessment and Referral Team (SMART) was established in 2005 to assist residents who experience a psychological crisis. Paramedics in the SMART program are trained to assess mental health situations, interview family members, and contact an individual’s therapist. The program provides a SMART SUV rather than an ambulance. The SUV can transport individuals with mental health issues to a shelter, a treatment center, a therapist’s office, or their own homes. The SMART program is viewed as a cost-effective way to care for residents with mental health issues and to reduce overcrowding in hospital emergency rooms.
