I help clients identify patterns and issues blocking the changes wanted and come up with practical suggestions and deeper explorations to shift these so goals can be achieved and happiness made possible. I give direct suggestions and advice when I feel it is needed. My approach incorporates humor, insight and compassion to create a dynamic and safe healing environment. Central to my work is looking at attachment patterns: helping you identify what yours are, and how they interact with those of the important people in your lives. This understanding is incredibly freeing and maps a path for dealing with these relationships in a way that is more positive. Wikipedia has a fairly good description of attachment psychology if you would like to know more. I also incorporate the new research on how our nervous system works and interacts with our emotional well being as well as the mindfulness based practices emerging from Buddhism.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
I am a specialist in couples therapy and individual therapy focused on relationship issues. I also offer hypnotherapy as an adjunct to talk therapy or as a stand alone treatment for habit change, phobias, test-taking anxiety, trauma and PTSD, addictions, depression and anxiety. I also have specialized training in working with sexual abuse survivors and people struggling with addiction.
Had a Negative Therapy Experience?
I am always saddened and sometimes shocked to hear about the bad things that have happened to people with prior therapists. When you come to therapy you are in pain and therefor a vulnerable place and are deserving of a therapist who is trustworthy, competent and committed to your healing process. I recommend that anyone who has had a negative experience and actually anyone starting therapy for the first time to do a little bit of 'therapist shopping', making initial appointments with two or three therapists and then picking the one you feel the most comfortable with. It is important that you feel that you 'click' with the therapist and I would encourage you to trust your gut feeling in this process.
