Importance of the Client-Therapist Alliance

Some therapist are better than others. Why is this? Research has discovered that it has little to do with a therapist's particular approach (for example cognitive therapy versus Interpersonal therapy.)

A recent study published by the American Psychological Association has found that the most effective therapists build strong relationships with their clients and have highly developed interpersonal skills including warmth, acceptance, empathy and the ability to identify how a client is feeling.

How does this translate for you? If, within the first several sessions, you feel comfortable in the room with your therapist - as if your therapist is warm and accepting of you. And, if you feel that your therapist has really helped you identify what your coping with, and has shared with you how it can be resolved, you are receiving signs that you are sitting with a good therapist.

Though a therapist's education and approach are important, give the most weight to how you feel in the room with your therapist. It is this feeling and connection which will lend most to your progress in therapy, and finding relief from the issues you are facing.
