Providing care for elderly parents is a growing trend among American families. The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) reports that almost 25% of households in the United States currently provide care for at least one older adult. While the intent to care for one's aged parents or relatives is commendable, some families may develop serious health and relationship issues due to the pressures associated with caregiving. This situation is an example of how changes to a family dynamic may affect more than one member, which is a simplified way to explain the reason why many families in New York may choose to find and work with a licensed family counselor.

In the example of caring for an elderly relative, a marital relationship may be adversely affected as spouses need to sacrifice time together in order to fulfill their caregiving responsibilities. Parent-child interactions, as well as time spent engaging in pleasurable social and individual activities, may also decrease for similar reasons. Although the relative being cared for may be dearly loved by the family, these changes can affect some family members in profound ways, from simple frustration, to increased risk for serious health issues.

Family therapy interventions have helped many people cope with a number of issues associated with mental health issues, illnesses, conflicts, and changes in family systems. Family therapists in New York, for example, may provide family counseling services that can help reduce caregiver stress and treat depressive symptoms. Children may benefit from creative family therapy techniques, such as art therapy and play therapy, that help them to better understand the issues affecting the family. Counseling may be offered to individual family members or the entire family in a group setting, with each person allowed to express themselves openly without fear of judgment from relatives or the family counselor. In New York, family therapists may work to highlight the individual strengths of each family member and help people in treatment understand how they contribute to the family system.
