In the state of New York, information from the 2016 Mental Health America survey states that approximately 85,000 young people are affected by substance abuse and dependence issues. In an attempt to help their children, many parents choose to find a psychologist or psychiatrist skilled in working with children and teens. In New York, child psychiatrists and child psychologists look for specific risk factors to identify and help teens with interventions for addiction. Some of these risk factors include:

  • A lack of parental supervision
  • Low levels of parent-child interaction
  • Inappropriate or inconsistent levels of discipline
  • Conflicts within the family
  • Perceived parental approval or indifference toward drug or alcohol use

Though some teens may argue that their drug and alcohol use is merely recreational, qualified child psychologists and child psychiatrists are aware that serious issues may soon develop in these circumstances. For instance, social and family relationships may break down, important activities or responsibilities may become crowded out, and addictive behaviors may increase. Signs that your child may be experiencing substance abuse and might benefit from child therapy or professional child counseling services include: (1) finding paraphernalia used for administering drugs (such as syringes or pipes), (2) finding physical evidence of drugs or alcohol, (3) falling grades in school, especially if your child typically reports high grades, (4) reduced communication, (5) increased social isolation, (6) lying or evasiveness, especially concerning their current activities.

Despite these challenges, behavioral therapy, when delivered by a licensed child psychologist or child psychiatrist, may help to reduce or eliminate negative behaviors in children. Psychologists in New York may use psychotherapy in group or individual settings to unearth and address the underlying reasons for these behaviors. Once the issues have been identified, steps may be taken to resolve or manage them effectively.
