East Lansing is a city in Ingham County, Michigan. East Lansing is the home of Michigan State University, which is one of the city’s largest employers. The city was initially called Collegeville, but officials renamed the city East Lansing in 1907. 

East Lansing has a population of 48,800. The median age among residents is 21 years old. Around 87% of people in East Lansing are American citizens (compared to 93% of people nationwide).

The population of East Lansing is 72% white, 12% Asian, 8% black, and 5% Hispanic. Around 16% of residents were born in a foreign country. Nineteen percent of residents speak a language other than English at home. There are 2,800 Chinese speakers and 1,100 Spanish speakers in the city.

Mental Health in East Lansing

A 2013 survey asked Michigan residents about their mental health. It measured poor mental health by how often someone’s mental health interfered with daily activities in the past 30 days. According to the survey, 4.2% of adults in Ingham County reported poor mental health. This number was roughly a third of the rate for Michigan as a whole (12.0%). 

Adolescents in Ingham County tended to have worse mental health. Survey data showed 32.0% of county youth had depression symptoms in the past year. This rate was significantly higher than the state rate of 26.0%.
