About Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor is the seat of Washtenaw County, Michigan. The city was founded by Elisha Rumsey and John Allen in 1824. They named the city after their wives (both called Ann) and the natural arbors in the area. Ann Arbor is located on the Huron River and covers 28 square miles. The city is home to 121,000 people.

In 1837, the University of Michigan moved to Ann Arbor and contributed significantly to its development. The university’s medical school and a complex of local hospitals have helped to position Ann Arbor as a leader in the medical field. The city is also a center for nuclear, aeronautical, space, metallurgical, and chemical research.

Over 96% of Ann Arbor residents who are over 25 years old have graduated from high school. Over 72% of residents in this age group have also earned a bachelor’s degree. People in Ann Arbor earn a mean annual wage of $37,200 and have a median household income of $57,700. Over 23% of residents live in poverty.

Mental Health in Ann Arbor

In 2016, more than 2,300 adults with serious mental health issues received care in Washtenaw County. Over 1,000 adult residents who have intellectual or developmental disabilities were able to access treatment. Fifty-six percent of Washtenaw residents who received mental health care were white, while 31% of recipients were black. Roughly 5% of residents in Ann Arbor who are younger than age 65 do not have health insurance.  

Washtenaw County is experiencing an opioid crisis. In Washtenaw, 25-30% of opioid overdoses are fatal. The county reported 260 opioid-related deaths from 2011 to 2016.
