My Approach to Helping

As a Marriage and Family Therapist, it is my intention to guide my clients through the therapy process in a safe and healthy environment. I utilize a solution focused approach to enable clients to become less entrenched in their problems and more focused on their strengths and resources to facilitate solutions to their problems. I also approach therapy from systemic perspective, meaning that each person is seen in the context of their family experience, social experiences, and relationship interactions. Above all, I believe that my presence as a safe person and the relationship that I develop with my clients is the most important factor in our journey through the therapy process. In my work with couples, I often use the Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) model. In this approach the couple works together to build a secure attachment in their relationship and increase the accessibility and responsiveness of each partner to the other's emotional cues. This approach looks within at the couples emotional relatedness and between at how partners engage each other. The EFT model is one of the most highly researched and has shown a great amount of success for couples. I believe that therapy is a collaborative process between the client and therapist. In this process, it is my intention to focus on the strengths of the client and highlight how these strengths will help the client to achieve their goals.

More Info About My Practice

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist-Associate. Essentially, this means that I have completed all academic requirements and sat for and passed the National Licensing Exam for Marriage and Family Therapists and I am completing the hours requirements for the state of Texas. I hold a B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Mississippi and a M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Southern Mississippi. I have had the opportunity to grow as a therapist through many experiences. Iworked in a family program for alcohol and drug rehabilitation for a year during graduate school. During this experience, I worked with clients experiencing substance addiction, sexual addictions, and eating disorders. In this program I also provided services to the families of the treatment clients. In addition, I have had vast experience providing services to individuals, couples, and families experiencing many difficulties in their lives. I currently, and for the past 2 years, work with adult and child victims of domestic abuse. In my work as a children's therapist, I use a directive approach to address specific needs of the population with which I work. In this process I include safety planning, abuse education and processing, anger management, and self-esteem building. I believe that victims of violence need a nurturing space in which to process the traumatic events that have taken place to move forward with their lives, and it is my intention to provide that space. I believe that every individual, couple, and family possess the strengths to live a fulfilled life. As a therapist, I believe in highlighting these strengths to reveal the power in every individual and relationship.
