Usually people come to therapy when they feel "stuck" or realize that something in their life is not working. One might be feeling depressed or anxious or realize that he or she is having a problem with relationships, work, money etc. How psychotherapy works is that, it helps the individual to recognize the particular life patterns that are not working for him anymore. Therapy also helps one to see how she is the one who is self-sabotaging her goals and desires. Often these negative patterns are created in childhood and we carry them (unconsciously) with us into adulthood. We learn how to relate to the rest of the world by how our parents or original caregivers related to us. When we were growing up, we learned to control different parts of ourselves in order to survive in our families. By bringing all of this to consciousness, we empower ourselves to live our lives from a happier place and transform our dysfunctional behaviors into functional ones.
It is quite normal to feel ambivalent about therapy. I believe that therapy works, when you find the right therapist, who can connect with you and help you connect better with others as well. When you find a therapist who can listen carefully with care to what you are saying and help you connect with your inner truth, yet challenge your unconscious self-limiting beliefs you have found the recipe for real change and transformation.
