My Approach to Helping
My philosophy is that a therapist is there to guide people to the answers that reside within them. I believe that we carry our own wisdom but often have blocks to the healing process. A therapist can serve as a teacher, a guide, or someone to help remove those blocks so that individuals, couples and families can gain insight on an emotional, physical, mental and spiritual level. It is important to be open to collaborative therapies as long as they do no harm to the patient. I believe in creating a safe, sacred space for the healing process to take place then letting each patient go, trusting in their inner knowledge.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

The most important factors in choosing a therapist is that the chosen therapist is able to create a safe place in which you are able to explore and voice issues of an extremely personal nature. Also, that the therapist is familiar with the ethics and laws of your state and abides by them. The therapist must be able to explain confidentiality and its limits. He or she must also treat you, the patient, with total respect withholding judgment of any kind. You should also consider whether the therapist has good boundaries, making sure to ask your permission before addressing a particular problem and maintains the therapist/client relationship in a professional manner. A good therapist will not tell you what you need or what to do. You are the expert on your life. A good therapist understands this and will simply guide you to your own personal truth. He or she will be most interested in empowering you so that you can live your life successfully. The best therapist will want to work his or her way out of a job.

How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist

I am a 53-year-old female who has raised two children and gone through two divorces. I have learned from my mistakes and sought out personal growth as a consequence of my life choices. I believe that every therapist or counselor should be required to complete a minimum of one (possibly two) years of therapy to become a licensed professional. My experience with the challenges of marriage while raising a mentally challenged child has given me a close-up view of the details involved with such experiences. It made me a much less judgmental, more compassionate individual with a great deal of empathy. Not only am I able to diagnose individuals, I am able to empathize or a deeper level because in many cases I HAVE walked in their shoes. I can do more than simply imagine how they are feeling. The combination of life experience and higher education is unbeatable.
