This interactive presentation will introduce you to social therapy—a unique group therapy approach that helps those in treatment grow and create the lives they want. Social Therapy illustrates that, though many people experience emotional pain individually, they can get better when healing with others. The group work focuses on critical life skills such as attending, becoming emotionally and socially flexible, and living life in a continuously creative fashion. This approach has successfully treated a wide variety of emotional and life issues.

This developmental and non-diagnostic approach is one of many new approaches that are part of a Cultural Revolution taking place in the field: postmodern challenges, a new focus on prevention, and findings in brain science that identify relationality as key to change and to development. Some people within this Cultural Revolution are asking if life could be better understood if seen through the eyes of a poet, storyteller, or painter, rather than just from the perspective of the scientific community. Seeing life from a cultural and relational lens is an important addition to clinicians' therapeutic skill sets.

Jennifer Bullock and Murray Dabby are group therapists in private practice and teachers of therapists, conducting training for clinicians who are interested in adding or advancing their group therapy skills.

This introductory web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Identify the distinction between some traditional group therapy models and the social therapeutic group therapy approach;

  2. Utilize one group-building technique;

  3. Explain the use of creativity and performance in the group framework;

  4. Identify and focus on 'relationality' and the social as the unit of development in therapeutic work.
