It is a perennial challenge for therapists to be effective with clients, particularly when therapy gets stuck or stalled. Drawing on new insights from brain science, this presentation delivers 10 practical, creative strategies you can use with people who are "stuck" to clear internal conflicts, elicit motivation, and engage clients more fully in the change process.

More specifically, you’ll discover that the key to triggering “Aha!” moments is to spark a person's emotional brain, which learns through felt experiences, not rational discussion. Learn how you can craft such transformational, felt experiences in your sessions as Courtney Armstrong shares new spins on interventions that utilize attunement, metaphor, imagery, storytelling, humor, play, music, and movement.

  2. Identify one key communication strategy that fosters attunement, strengthens the therapeutic alliance, and diffuses resistance.

  3. Use the emerging understanding of memory reconsolidation to design interventions with more transformational impact.

  4. Describe at least two ways to utilize imagery, music, playfulness, or movement to regulate emotions and elicit intrinsic motivation.
