Research on neuroplasticity has improved our understanding of how to apply brain calming strategies to enhance cognitive functioning. Where it was once thought that the brain was hardwired, we now recognize the malleability and growth potential of the human brain. This presentation incorporates current research on cognitive and limbic calming strategies and movement techniques to enhance executive function. Utilizing meditation, movement exercises, music, and drawing, we can help our patients to improve brain function and critical thinking skills to impact overall daily functioning.

Children and adults with ADHD can benefit from limbic activities that calm the brain prior to and during cognitive skill development. Reviewing overall brain function, areas of the brain that require remediation, and current research, we will explore practical strategies employed in a pediatric neuropsychology practice that participants may use in their own practices to improve academic, social, and motor skills.

In this applied research web conference, participants will explore using music, art, and movement to enhance limbic calming and cognitive skills in clients. Simple explanations of brain functions demonstrate why music, art, and meditation are so beneficial in the development of skills, making it easy for clinicians to use these strategies in everyday practice. We will also discuss how and when to use brain-based interventions with families in their own homes as Dr. Kenney teaches participants her five-step pyramid of family intervention.

This web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Identify the eight domains of executive function and how the limbic brain mediates executive function;

  2. Explain why art, music, mediation, and movement improve cognitive functioning in children and adults with diagnoses, specifically ADHD;

  3. Apply research-based skill development exercises that can be used with people in therapy;

  4. Outline Dr. Kenney’s in-home intervention methodology;

  5. List Dr. Kenney’s five step pyramid for brain-based skills interventions.

Limitations: As in any field of psychology, brain science is new and evolving. Participants will be encouraged to study research as it becomes available. Risks of the presentation are oversimplification and rigid thinking. Flexibility and creativity will be encouraged.
