The Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy® (PACT) methodology utilizes a bottom-up versus a top-down approach to psychotherapy. The focus of PACT is on fast and often surprising interventions that allow the clinician access to implicit systems revealed in micro-expressions and micro-movements in the face and body, respectively.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Stan Tatkin will provide an overview of the principles of PACT including its three domains: attachment theory, arousal regulation, and developmental neuroscience. He will explore how early attachment patterns are somatically imprinted onto the development of the brain and nervous system as well as share basic PACT interviewing techniques.

Attendees will not only develop a better understanding of attachment types and working with arousal regulation, but also learn how to direct couples toward secure functioning. Dr. Tatkin will explain how clinicians can analyze moment-to-moment variations and shifts in affect and arousal in addition to therapeutically staging interventions that will trigger arousal and implicit somatoaffective experience and memory.

This introductory instructional level course is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Describe the three domains of Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy® (PACT).

  2. List the characteristics of secure functioning and explain its significance for the PACT therapist.

  3. Differentiate between autoregulation, self-regulation, and interactive regulation.

  4. Identify three primary attachment styles and explain their influence in couple relationships.

  5. Explain three basic PACT interviewing skills.
