Disordered eating is a complicated matter. It comprises a range of behaviors and attitudes, including but by no means limited to those that meet the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual (DSM) criteria for eating disorders. Cultural attitudes about weight and body size are not responsible for the origins of eating disorders, but they certainly give them a fertile environment in which to flourish.

The DSM-IV names three main types of eating disorders: Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. However, many individuals who struggle with disordered eating behavior do not meet official diagnostic criteria in the DSM, even though they exhibit varying degrees of a disordered relationship with food, body, and self. It is not uncommon for a compulsive relationship with exercise to be present in these individuals as well. Food issues and eating issues that cause weight gain or manifest as overeating are often regarded as bad habits or lack of willpower. In this Web Conference, we will discuss the causes and dangers of, and solutions to, disordered relationships with food, exercise, and body.
