Teens and twenty-somethings are often driven by social comparison, an ego ideal, and the vision of a future self. These influences serve as a virtual developmental pressure cooker. Further, human development is asynchronous, meaning that we develop in different areas at different rates. When adolescents and young adults feel behind or ahead in any of these key areas it often adds to the intense pressure they may already feel.

This web conference utilizes a fresh approach to teaching clinicians how to help young people understand the pressures and developmental issues they face. We will also look at examples of interventions that create experiences to help youth internalize the life skills they need to become more active agents of their own growth.

The developmental stress reduction method (DSRM)© offers a new approach to decision-making and self-awareness that honors the intelligence of youth and demystifies their sometimes inconsistent and self-defeating behavior. New research about how wisdom is acquired has profound implications for young people and offers youth-oriented therapists creative tools that cultivate wisdom acceleration. If we succeed at facilitating this emerging adult stage, we are more likely to steer youth toward more productive and healthier lives.

This intermediate instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Demonstrate the Asynchronous Development Assessment in two ways.

  2. Apply the three treatment components of the DSRM.

  3. Describe action-oriented interventions that are designed to create transformative experiences for clients.

  4. Identify opportunities to apply the model to prevention efforts by learning how to increase developmental self-awareness in youth populations.
