My Approach to Helping

Our work together will be empowering! My approach focuses on what is working in your life: identifying your strengths and solutions. It is my belief that therapy begins the moment a person makes the first appointment with a therapist. It is at that moment that the person is ready to begin making changes in his/her life, and is ready to do something about it. It is also my belief that the most important part of therapy is the relationship between client and therapist. As a therapist, I will provide a safe, open, non-judgmental environment in which you will be able to speak about yourself, your history, and your relationships. No matter what the situation is that brought you in to counseling in the first place, together we will work toward positive change. People come to counseling for many different reasons, although often times it is because a relationship is in distress. Even if only one member of the relationship comes to therapy, change will occur within that person, and change will occur in the relationship. Although it is greatly beneficial for both members in a relationship to come to counseling, it is also greatly beneficial if only one member participates. The only person you can change is yourself; however, you do have the ability to change the way a relationship works by changing your own actions and behaviors. The counseling process takes work and effort from both the therapist and client. It will be my job to help you realize patterns that have become established in your life and facilitate change toward new, positive patterns. Counseling is not a quick fix or a cure for the problems in your life; instead, counseling is insight and education as to how you can create positive change in any situation in your life.
