When I join a client in therapy, I bring the following beliefs to our conversations: There is a wisdom within each of us that can guide us to create the life we would find most satisfying. We are not our problems, and we can learn to identify with our wholeness instead of our brokenness. We not only have the capacity to change, we all have an undeniable urge to keep growing and becoming more of who we are. We also resist change, often to the point of intolerable circumstances. There is great opportunity for growth when we embrace such circumstances. In the limbo between how we are now and how we would like to be, we must recognize our ambivalence. Healing happens when we negotiate our conflicting feelings and choose to take the steps that lead us into harmony with our values, hopes and dreams. We can recognize the strategies we learned to live by in the past and choose to create new ones that serve us better in the present. We do not heal by listening to someone else's wisdom. We heal by listening to our own. My job is to help clients find that voice inside.
