My Approach to Helping
I specialize in helping people with relationship and attachment issues. I believe that the ways in which we perceive, relate and respond to other people can have a profound impact on many different aspects of our lives. Understanding how we tend to perceive and relate to others can be an important step in identifying patterns that are maladaptive or causing us to feel tense, anxious, angry, depressed, guarded or isolated.

When providing individual therapy, I tend to focus on helping people understand their relational patterns, identify what isn't working for them, practice new ways of relating and develop new coping and relationship skills. I have a similar focus in couples and family therapy, but tend to focus directly on how people are relating with each other during the session. I often find that a successful course of therapy brings a new found sense of freedom for clients. It can be very liberating to feel the freedom of responding to your child, spouse, parents, siblings, colleagues, friends and others in new ways. This generally leads to the people you relate with reacting to you in new ways also.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I am particularly interested in helping adults and adolescents with different types of relationship issues and I have a strong interest in the link between relationship patterns and mental health symptoms. As a graduate student, I found myself drawn to theoretical approaches to therapy that ultimately were about helping clients relate to others in more adaptive ways. I have over 15 years of experience providing mental health and social services to clients with serious mental health conditions and I feel that I work well with clients diagnosed with conditions like: personality disorders, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, etc. I have also enjoyed working with artists, writers and other creative people who feel that mental health symptoms and/or relational challenges have had a negative impact on their creative work.
