My Approach to Helping
Technically, my approach to therapy is Integrative, combining elements from different perspectives to get to know each person and develop understanding of her/his unique identity, experiences, and presenting concerns. I use Client-centered perspectives to develop the therapeutic relationship within a collaborative framework and establish an atmosphere of equality, trust and safety. From this framework, I frequently integrate techniques from Interpersonal Process, Experiential/Gestalt, and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy modalities as appropriate to the individual client. I am willing to discuss my approach at any time, including both before and during the course of therapy. In other words, I tailor what I do to each individual taking into account your unique cultural background, values, beliefs, and experiences. We will work together towards the goals you establish. I welcome your input as we develop insight and make changes that will be congruent with who you are as a person and the life you wish to lead. I view therapy as a collaborative relationship in which you can become empowered to pursue the changes that will bring you greater peace and contentment in your life. To meet these goals, I will contribute my training and expertise as well as sharing my honest interpersonal feedback. I am not here to tell you what you have to do, but to help you explore options to determine what will work best for you. My underlying framework for change is the belief that through increasing your awareness of and confidence in yourself, you will be empowered to live a life more consistent with your values and ideals and therefore experience increased satisfaction, peace, and fulfillment with yourself, your relationships, and your past and present life circumstances.

More Info About My Practice
My training is considered generalist, which means I am qualified and comfortable working with people experiencing a wide range of presenting issues and life concerns. In addition, I have developed specializations in multicultural/diversity issues, religious/spiritual diversity, and supervision/training. I tend to work well with clients who have reservations about therapy or are trying therapy for the first-time as well as those who are motivated for self-growth and change towards more fulfilling lives. A few of my strengths as a therapist include my respect and incorporation of a person's unique identity into the therapy process, multicultural awareness and sensitivity, balance of support and challenge, and tailored approach to each person with whom I work.

What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist

I have always loved to listen to people, to really seek to hear others in a way that leads to genuine connections and understanding. Although my interest in becoming a psychologist began before I probably truly knew what it meant (7th grade), my experiences and training over time have only strengthened and reaffirmed my commitment to this type of deep listening which allows me to work with people as they learn more about themselves, develop greater compassion for their own life experiences, and increase recognition of their inherent strengths and self-worth. My passion is reinforced every time I witness someone developing new insight and using this awareness to implement changes to feel greater peace with themselves and improved quality of their relationships with others.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

To get the most out of therapy, the most important factor is that you feel comfortable with the person with whom you're working. This comfort is essential for being able to open up and share your thoughts and feelings honestly, which in turn allows you the most insight to your own processes as well as allowing the therapist the chance to understand and support you. There are many different styles of therapy and personalities of therapists; sometimes to find the person with whom you're comfortable, you can initially contact a few therapists by phone or email, ask a couple questions, and get a feel for their style. In addition, your own readiness and motivation to make use of the time will be important determinants to how much you get out of the process. Having an honest dialogue with potential therapists can increase the effectiveness of therapy, and the likelihood of finding a good match.
