National statistics for the prevalence of adult depression vary but suggest that at least 15% of all adult Americans have had at least one depressive episode in their lives. Depression can be a severely debilitating illness that results in decreased physical health, impaired functioning, lost productivity, and overall negative well-being and quality of life. There are many different treatments for depression including therapy, diet, exercise, and medication. Vitamins, specifically folate and B12, are commonly used in conjunction with other treatment methods to help clients with depression improve their moods. Although there has been extensive research on depression and medication, until now, there has been little attention given to the rate of vitamin use in clients suffering with depression. In an effort to better examine this trend, Guixiang Zhao of the Division of Adult and Community Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta conducted a study analyzing how often vitamins were used in female and male clients with depression.

Do Boys with ADHD Focus Better With Music?

Teachers and parents of children with ADHD know all too well how easily these special children can get distracted. The majority of research has shown that children with ADHD focus better and stay on task more when they are in an environment free from stimulation. But there is some evidence that specific stimulation can have a positive effect on these children. ?Other studies have shown that background music significantly improves performance on cognitive tasks for children with ADHD but does not impact or negatively impact the performance of non-ADHD controls,? said W.E. Pelham, Jr. of the Department of Psychology at the Center for Children and Families at Florida International University, and lead author of a study on distraction among ADHD boys. ?Despite these research findings, classroom teachers and the committees that revise the DSM continue to report and conclude that children with ADHD are more easily distracted than children without ADHD, and that distractors have only negative effects.?

Increase in Number of Non-Mental Health Professionals Prescribing Antidepressants

A recent study has revealed an alarming increase in the amount of antidepressants being prescribed in America. ?Most of the recent increase in antidepressant use is a consequence of the growing number of prescriptions written by physicians who are not psychiatrists,? said Ramin Mojtabai, associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and co-author of the study. ?In the United States, nearly four out of every five antidepressant prescriptions are written by such providers.? This dynamic has raised concern for the mental health field. ?In fact, antidepressants have been demonstrated to be clinically effective for only a limited number of psychiatric conditions-major depressive disorder, chronic depression (also known as dysthymic disorder), some anxiety disorders, and a few other well defined conditions,? said Mojtabai. ?In one study of privately insured plans, a majority (61.4 percent) of patients for whom antidepressants were prescribed did not receive diagnoses for any psychiatric disorders during the course of a year. In addition, there are concerns about side effects and costs of antidepressant use.?

Mandy nuzzled her 3 month old baby happily as she warmed his bottle. It felt so good to breathe in his sweet baby smell and touch his soft delicate skin, his little body curled in a warm embrace into the curve of her neck. Mandy was starting to feel like she had her ?sea-legs' as a new mom and was particularly enamored of the fact that her new baby was sleeping through the night. The rough night-time awakenings were beginning to subside as baby Noah matured and slept for longer periods. She was looking forward to meeting a new mom friend in the park with their babies after she gave Noah a bottle.

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords made her first public appearance last week when she joined her husband at the Houston Space Center as he received the Space Flight Medal. Giffords, who is still recovering from the brain injury she sustained from a gunshot wound to the head, will continue therapy indefinitely. Her doctors will advise her and her family what protocol to take, and she will be able to determine, after counseling with her loved ones, which course of action will be best for her recovery. The man who shot her does not have that option.

Unrelenting Sadness Experience of Depression

This is the experience in the cluster of possible depression experiences that many people think of when they think of depression. While sadness and crying can be part of any depression, it can be absent as well. It can also be the dominant symptom. The unrelenting sadness experience of depression causes people to feel deeply sad and usually cry often. They don?t get much or any relief from crying, they sometimes still feel this way long after a loss occurred, and sometimes feel sad without having had a loss.

Being human means that we can experience serious bouts of depression, which can make life feel seriously out of balance. There is a sense that we have lost sight of our own vitality and purpose. Depression, however, does not mean that we are ?sick,? as much as it means we may be coping with difficulties in such a way as to avoid feeling badly or dealing with problems. Often, in our attempt to not feel painful feelings, we avoid dealing with difficulties regarding our health, our relationships, our work, and our play. We avoid, withdraw, isolate, numb ourselves (through unhealthy behaviors), and paradoxically make ourselves feel worse.

For all the research that has been done in the last twenty years attempting to understand the brain, the organ at the top of our spine retains its essential mystery. We know more now than ever how the brain works, how it has developed over the centuries to do the miraculous things it does, and what is happening to it when it gets injured. Doctors, parents, coaches and professional athletes are more alert to the dangers of brain concussion. Neurologists study to become adept at repairing the brain with surgery, cellular transplant, or electrical stimulus. Every one of us has a stake in the health of our minds.

Is psychotherapy purely a medical treatment warranted only for treating specific mental health disorders? Can psychotherapy also be used to address the multitude of emotional, cognitive, and physiological ways in which people suffer, ways that do not meet the diagnostic criteria for categorically-based syndromes? Additionally, is psychotherapy of any use to those seeking self-growth, wisdom, clarity, compassion, self-esteem, and consciousness?

I?m a psychotherapist/counselor, not a medical doctor/psychiatrist! So what I write in this blog is drawn from my (extensive) experience working with people who have challenges and/or difficulties with sex ?
Paying Attention: ADHD and our Children, Inside and Out

The American Psychiatric Association defines attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as a ?persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that is more frequently displayed and more severe than is typically observed in individuals at a comparable level of development? (1). ADHD is further indicated by three subtypes; predominately hyperactive-impulsive type, predominantly inattentive type, and combined type. According to the APA, ADHD primarily affects school-age children, approximately 3%-7% of all children in the U.S, (1), with approximately 30-50% retaining the disorder as adults (2). Not only are these numbers cause for concern, they are increasing: there has been a three or four-fold increase in diagnosis of ADHD since the late 1980s (3).

In modern society, where academia is an integral aspect of professional fields, and a constantly growing body of bright minds and researchers, it is unsurprising that a veritable sea of academic journals are published each month, quarter, or year. Rounding up the prominent studies and touching upon extant wisdom worth revisiting, these journals create the basis for understanding and cooperation within professional communities. In the field of psychology, an impressive number of journals focus on everything from adolescent development to Alzheimer's. Yet when it comes to schizophrenia, the selection is limited to journals that grapple with what little we understand about the condition and its etiology.

A new study examining the effects of the common antidepressent Citalopram (brand name: Celexa) has found clinically significant differences in how the genders respond to its use in treating depression. A study of nearly three-thousand Americans found women 33% more likely to acheive a full remittane of depressive symptoms, despite the fact that their depression was overall more severe than men's.

Psychiatry without Psychotherapy

From the good news / bad news department: Mainstream media sources are reporting that American psychiatrists have essentially stopped practicing psychotherapy ? except with private paying clients, and even then only rarely ? and are dealing almost exclusively with medication management. Over the last twenty years, the percentage of psychiatrists offering talk therapy has declined from a little less than half to a little more than one quarter, according to the most recent National Ambulatory Care Survey. As a result, the success rates for treating depression and anxiety have slipped, since a combination of talk and medicine is always the preferred treatment.
