I consider the goals of therapy to be simple. You want to feel better and you want to function better. I often describe these goals as: being comfortable in your own skin, reaching your potential and your limits, making peace with your demons, and being more of who you really are.
The process of therapy varies depending on your needs. I take a practical approach with Freud's wise words in mind, "There are many ways and means of practicing psychotherapy. All that lead to recovery are good."
We might look into your past. Or we may key in on your existing strengths and abilities. From a higher perspective, we might approach the work through your spiritual life. Sometimes it makes the most sense to look at your current relationships. We can also take a traditional Jungian approach in dreamwork and active imagination.

I have written a short essay called "How to Choose the Right Therapist for You" that can be found on my website, www.petehsu.com. It offers a way to organize and conduct your therapist search.
