My Approach to Helping
My practice is for children, adolescents, and families. In many ways, childhood is a culture in of itself with its' own unique challenges, demands, expectations, risks, and, yes, wonders. In a similar regard, counseling children requires a unique set of skills as communication is so multifaceted. I "listen" to the child's play, art expression, developmental level and "hear" what the child/adolescent has to say both verbally and nonverbally to understand the child's self and world and his/her functioning in family, school, community, and culture. Necessarily, when I work with children and adolescents, I may involve the family in counseling sessions at times as the family is the child's core and primary place for learning about relationships and communication as well as practicing behaviors. When an individual in the family makes changes, this often necessitates others in the family doing the same. The family is a very wonderful and dynamic system of therapeutic possibility of change and growth for all members. Most importantly, I have a passion for working with children/adolescents and a relationship of trust and unconditional positive regard is the basis for my work with your child. It is also my desire to build a relationship of trust with you as good communication between us is essential. Though my counseling skills are based on child development, sound theory, and theoretical methods, I strive for "user friendly" foundations and strategies and tend to be very creative in my counseling approaches.
