My Approach to Helping

The psychotherapy that I provide is supportive and collaborative in nature. It is a place for you to verbalize your feelings, clarify what you want in a given situation, and examine your coping strategies. I integrate therapy techniques from different approaches, primarily interpersonal (IPT), cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic therapies. The IPT component focuses on identifying any problematic patterns in relationships and helping you to make changes, e.g. to communicate your needs more effectively. It also supports you in adjusting to the demands of a new role at work or home. The work I do with clients to explore the influence of their past stems from the psychodynamic or analytic therapy approach. This helps you to heal from past experiences, by naming, understanding and processing them in a new way. The cognitive techniques address beliefs and thought patterns that are causing you pain or getting in your way and may involve written exercises to help you recognize and intervene in your automatic thoughts. Sometimes I will recommend behavioral strategies to help a client manage intense emotions or change a habit. The first couple of sessions involve an evaluation of your needs, as well as your expectations for therapy. I will offer you feedback on what our work would include, and I will be happy to answer any questions that you might have about my approach.
