Psychotherapy
I'm a licensed professional.
MFC - MFC 46517
The best place to start is wherever the client wants to start and is comfortable. As we build our relationship, clients generally begin to talk about the profound aspects, their history and relationships in their lives. As clients tell their story, they begin to do the work that enables them to gain insight that promotes postive change.
Unfortunately, people can have negative therapeutic experience. I would explore with the client what went wrong in the therapy and ask about their experience of possibly feeling unsafe, unheard, betrayed or hurt in any way. I would inquire what does the client want out of the therapy experience and what are his/her goals. My hope would be to create and atmosphere that allows the client to open the door to the process and possibility that trust can be built and can be lasting. If we can build the foundation, I believe a client can truly believe and invest in a therapy experience that provides for growth, change and goals acheived.
Finding a good fit with your therapist is the formost step to a positive therapeutic experience. It is important to ask your potential therapist questions; for example, what is her/his background?, what kind(s) of populations does he/she work with?, what is therapy like?, what can I expect?, express what you want out of the therapeutic experience. When you sit with your therapist, do you feel safe? Do you feel like he/she can handle whatever it is you need to say? Being able to sit with your therapist and genuinely feel connected, validated and heard is really important. Most of all, believing that you can trust your therapist with your genuine self is the key to a lasting and positive therapeutic experience.
