My Approach to Helping
I'm here and I'm ready to listen to your thoughts, your feelings, and your experiences without judgement. I promise whatever journey you choose to take I'll be right beside you. Therapy is a journey to the inner layers of ones self and toward a more satisfying life. Each of us must struggle with ourselves in our journey toward a fully satisfying life. Therapy is about reducing that struggle, overcoming the obstacles in your path, getting out of your own way and becoming the person we want to be. The goal of couples therapy is to help each person feel more satified in the relationship. I start with a Relationship Report Card where I and each member of the couple grade the couple on ten factors. This report card will help identify hotspots, guide the therapy, and help evaluate progress.

I have twenty years experience as a therapist, working with individuals, couples and families. I've also served on the faculties of several universities and published numerous books and articles. My strong publication record is a testament to my extensive knowledge in numerous areas of psychology. I've also appeared on hundreds of radio and television programs and I am known for coining the term LATCHKEY CHILDREN. My career started as a high school math teacher and I have also served as the principal of an inner-city school. I have a deep understanding of school related issues and achievement problems. I have traveled extensively around the world and lived in Asia for two years. I am sensitive to cultural issues and how they impact our interaction with others.

My Role as a Therapist

As a therapist I'm known for my honestly and insight. My style varies from person to person based on an individuals goals and personal style. I'm here to help you get where you want to go and I will respect how fast or how slow you want to get there. A good therapist does more than just listen. I am not minimizing the significance of an empathic listener and I will certainly work hard to hear both what you are saying and implying with a non-judgemental ear. But I will also give you honest feedback, point out cognitive distortions and inconsistancies in your narrative. I also feel it is my responsibility to educate and motivate. I know change is hard and we all need both a coach and a cheerleader.
