Feeling depressed and anxious are often related to being overwhelmed and lacking a sense of control in one's life. This can occur from being bombarded by life events, or having ongoing stressors, such as difficult relationships. Having negative thoughts about ourselves or the situations we face contribute to feeling anxious and depressed. When we are self-critical and doubt ourselves, we worry that other people see us the same way. Learning to change these patterns of negative thinking and the mistaken beliefs we have about ourselves can increase self-esteem and our ability to cope more effectively. How we learned to cope in past situations and relationships effects how we deal with the present. Understanding how these patterns developed in the past can lesson frustration and stress that contribute to feeling anxious and depressed.
