I believe that the purpose of psychotherapy is to provide options, and letting people see and feel that they are more than victims of their circumstances. Life is filled with situations out of our control, but if we learn how to see our own roles in those circumstances, whether it is through action or our thoughts, we take some power back.
An identified problem, what has been done trying to address that problem, and what do you want to get out of therapy (goals).
Look at what you have to gain vs. what you have at risk. Change, even good change, can be scary and stressful, but sometimes in order to grow, you have to move into a place that may not be comfortable.
Finding someone that you feel comfortable, and one does not necessarily need to understand why or why not. The fact is we are people, and sometimes, for whatever reason, not everyone matches up. Therapy is not easy, as a good therapist will ask client's to try new points of view and new coping skills. As creatures of habit, this may feel odd, but that is what change and growth is about. Find someone that you feel you can form a therapeutic relationship with to get to your goals. Also, check the therapist out via the state's licensing office (state board of health). Do some background research on that therapist. Ask if there has been any complaints lodged. Ask questions of that therapist. If they cannot provide licensing information or answers to satisfy your questions, then move on to another therapist.
