I have been working with helping clients overcome their eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorders or disordered eating. In addition to seeing clients in my office and running a support group for clients with eating disorders, I have also worked in inpatient/outpatient settings. I believe that by incorporating mindfulness meditation to the treatment, I have seen an amazing shift in clients recovery. In many cases, it is important to get to the root of the clients struggles but then move on and incorporate tools to help them manage their impulses. Eating disorders is a very specific ongoing challenge in a person's life and it takes a lot of hard work to recover. Many times, the client has struggled with food since their childhood and so it is also a behavior that must be challenged. I teach specific DBT(dialectical behavioral therapy) tools to help the client access a repoitoire of ways to stand up to their eating disorder. I know that the road is long and challenging but I have witnessed many people achieve recovery which is extremely rewarding.
I believe that psychotherapy generally helps people when they realize they need help in their lives because the way that they have been coping is not working. The most important aspect of the process is the psychotherapeutic relationship. The client must feel safe and connected to the therapist. The therapist is then able to guide the client as they present their challenges and talk about their lives. As they uncover patterns that they have repeated, they can begin to see whether or not this has worked for them. In a mindfulness meditation, the client can start to focus on what is happening for them right now in the present moment. They start to become aware of their thoughts/feelings/body sensations and notice what they are experiencing. Most of us walk through life by ignoring what we're thinking/feeling and not realizing how this has impacted our lives. When we begin to understand these patterns we can begin to make changes. By meditating we can also change the neuroscience of the brain and create new connections. The old patterns no longer control us and we reinforce newer and healthier ways of being in the world.
