The reason I became a therapist, is because of the growth and support that I have received from my own experiences in therapy. That being said, the best way I can answer this question is to talk about the things that have always been important for me in choosing a therapist. I would say that first and foremost is the way I felt when I talked with them. Sometimes you can get a sense over the phone from your initial call, but you really get a sense in your first appointment. Just like when choosing any other relationship, how does that person make you feel? Often you get a visceral, a whole body feeling, like calmness or even discomfort. Feelings of comfort, being understood and not judged have always been the most important for me, and is something that I strive to give my clients now. Also, important might be whether you find the person relatable to you...that might mean in gender, age, style, the way in which they speak. And lastly, I feel that location is important. Therapy is a commitment and you want to make sure that getting there is not too much of a hassle and does not cause too much strain on your schedule.
