My Approach to Helping
My approach to therapy is dependent on the person I am seeing and their particular problem, needs, and requests. A session with me therefore, starts with a good evaluation/assessment. It is essential that not only do the people I see feel understood, but that I really understand the people I am seeing and have a good sense of exactly what it is they are wanting out of therapy. I am trained in several modalities of therapy and have learned that what is beneficial to one person, may be the wrong approach for someone else.
Speaking from a more relational and psychodynamic perspective, I believe that life is a process, and psychotherapy is a microcosm of that process, which is constantly unfolding and evolving just as one's life is.
I hold the mirror, if an effort to facilitate insight that a person might not otherwise have. Through authenticity which I discuss in sessions often and strive to teach, I become a witness to their thought patterns and feelings and with a keen eye and ears, along with intuitive wisdom, I hopefully can point out those things that are amiss, those things that are unhealthy, ineffective, and not beneficial to one's ability to flourish and grow.
Through the therapeutic relationship, healthy communication is modeled in a real-time, dynamic way and often it is the relationship between therapist and patient that provides the most opportunity for growth and change. As a therapist, I do not do not claim to be error free or faultless in all communication, but am responsible for calling myself out when mistakes are made, thus creating meaningful, teachable and authentic moments which can be taken from the therapeutic process, and reproduced outside of the therapy walls, which is the goal, to function well outside of therapy!
So much of life is about relationships, whether it is work, family, and personal...at the very core of every problem is at least one relationship that is flailing, or reflecting our symptoms, our defects, or our shortcomings in some way. They (our relationships) too mirror what is going on with us internally. Relationships are school. This is where the education is at.
I try to model unconditional acceptance and trust in the therapeutic relationship in order to foster open, honest communication. I make special note of body language, metaphor and symbolism used by the people I see, as a way to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of where they are at, and also as a way of providing feedback to the them, in order for them to have a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. I have found that teaching people symbolic sight, adds a depth and meaning to their life which is so important, especially when struggling with anxiety, depression, grief or loss issues.
My goal is to facilitate those "ah ha" or what I call "light bulb moments" when suddenly it all makes sense; not because I came right out and told them some profound truth or gave them some piece of advice like a parent might a child, but because I guided them there so that essentially it was discovered on their own. This is essential because it has to be understood at the very core of who they are, not because I told them, but because they really felt it, believed it, understood it, and owned it.
Therapy can be painful process or a beautiful process, but most often, it is both.
