My Approach to Helping
I use a systemic approach to treatment meaning that human problems are not isolated, but rather embedded in a complex psychological and social system. I tend to use psychodynamic approaches, primarily from Object Relations and Attachment theory. Within systems theory, I tend to use structural approaches when working with families. Structural approaches work on changing the dysfunctional established patterns in families. I work with couples using systemic approaches, primarily a combination of Emotionally Focused Therapy and Gottman. These approaches deal with dysfunctional patterns in the relationship, family of origin issues, and communication issues that get in the way of personal and relationship growth. I work with children using collaborative problem solving, sand tray, and play therapy. Collaborative problem solving therapy works to help parents work with explosive children/angry children. Sand Tray and play therapy help children metaphorically work out their anger, fears, and frustrations through their play. In working with individuals, as well as families and couples, we work collaboratively to identify automatic belief systems, or out of consciousness dysfunctional belief systems that interrupt mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well being. These outmoded belief systems often result in low self esteem and difficulty forming and maintaining healthy relationships with peers, children, coworkers, partners, and friends. The therapy process works to replace dysfunctional or outdated belief systems, help individuals learn to think clearly, achieve greater insight and growth, and make healthy decisions about life and living.
More Info About My Practice
Before I became a therapist, I had an extensive career in business and law. From my past career, I understand the unique demands and stress of the legal and business world and how each can contribute to psychological difficulty.
In 1999, I was diagnosed with remitting/relapsing Multiple Sclerosis. It was a big adjustment for me and my family. Living successfully with chronic disease is a 'family affair', meaning that everyone in the family, not just the patient, lives with MS. I work with families through the adjustment period following diagnosis and provide support and guidance for each family member who is living with MS, either by relationship or as the patient.
As the wife of a former military officer, a supporting member of the Washington State Field Force for the United States Military Academy at West Point, and mentor for the National Conference on Ethics in America held at West Point each year, I have the ability to understand issues that are unique to military families.
