Therapy aims to help bolster one's capacity for living a full life, instead of an emotionally restricted one. People who use therapy to make their lives more productive are neither weak nor inherently flawed. They are people who feel a deep need for change in the way their life is happening, or feel the anguish of relationships that are extremely important, but not working well. Or they are people who privately struggle with an inner sadness or shame, and seek relief so they can move forward with enhanced self-respect. There are other reasons people seek therapy, but in the end, the process itself has the same goal: to help that person regain a quality of life that will be empowering and satisfying. Therapy begins by assessing the nature of the particular problem (or set of concerns) a person hopes to ameliorate. It then broadens into getting a deeper and richer understanding of how this person has come to view life in the unique way that he or she does, and life events which have shaped this person's perspective. We are simultaneously working to uncover strengths, personal values and beliefs, which will be the foundation of a more effective and positive ability to engage with life in the future.
We know that the heavy stressors of modern life contribute to many physical illnesses as well as diminish one's quality of life. Problems of daily living or a troubled inner self may hurt one's physical health in silent ways. Psychotherapy can help restore inner and outer balance, and hopefully help lower the stress that not only leaves one emotionally hurt, but may also contribute to physical conditions as well.
