My Approach to Helping

People come to therapy for all sorts of reasons, but invariably, it is because they are stuck or thrown off balance by unexpected and painful life events. I believe it is not just a matter of regaining one's footing, but in finding a way to tolerate and accept the impasses and imbalances that are a part of life, with one's therapist witnessing you, assisting you and encouraging you along the way. I do not believe it is my job to "fix'' my clients, but to help them better understand and acknowledge all of who they are while also developing greater flexibility in dealing with life's challenges. I utilize a variety of techniques that combine verbal and drama psychotherapies. I specialize in a specific drama therapy approach called "Developmental Transformations" which utilizes improvisational role-play, creative imagery and compassionate humor as means to encounter and explore unexpected changes in life. I follow my clients' preferences when it comes to verbal or drama therapy. All of us have our own narratives and histories, but how we choose to live these histories in the present can expand and grow. Ultimately, I do not believe it is the approach that is the most important aspect of the therapy, but the relationship and the space created between the therapist and client that brings new discoveries and possibilities.
